The Artistry of Interior Design: Unveiling the Layers of Kim Cavalier's Designs
There’s something sacred to me about walking into a space that just feels right—where you can exhale, feel at ease, and sense that the home is not only beautiful, but truly yours. That’s the experience I strive to create for my clients. Over the years, I’ve come to see my work not just as interior design, but as a way of layering meaning into the home—through comfort, nature, and personal expression.
While every project is different, my approach is rooted in three layers that guide how I think about space: Grounding, Intrinsic, and Inspiring. Each adds its own dimension, and together, they shape a home that feels whole, intentional, and alive.
Grounding: The Comforting Palette and Fabrics
The first layer I focus on is what I call Grounding. It’s the layer that supports everything—your body, your breath, your energy. It begins with soft, soothing tones and tactile materials that create an immediate sense of calm the moment you step inside.
The color palette and furnishings serve as the foundation, carefully chosen to evoke ease and warmth. I gravitate toward creamy neutrals, earthy hues, and materials that feel good to the touch—like textured linens, cozy wools, and brushed metals. There’s something about these elements that helps the nervous system settle.
It’s never about perfection. It’s about crafting a visual and physical softness that allows you to fully relax. Through this grounding layer, I aim to create a space that offers both visual pleasure and a comforting ambiance—one that gently invites you to unwind and feel at home.

Intrinsic: Connecting with Nature's Essence
Nature has always been a quiet force in my life, and I carry that reverence into my work through what I call the Intrinsic layer. This is where I look for ways to echo the natural world inside the home—whether through soft, filtered light, organic textures, or the materials we choose together.
There’s something deeply restorative about bringing the outside in. Nature has an undeniable power to ground us, and when we let its elements weave into the interiors—through raw wood, hand-hewn stone, or even the play of natural light throughout the day—it creates a shift you can feel.
I often lean into these subtle moments: the grain of a reclaimed beam, the texture of a woven shade, or the way a shadow moves across the floor as the day unfolds. Even the smallest details can awaken a space.
To me, this layer connects us to something essential and enduring. It reminds us that beauty doesn’t always need to be added—it can be revealed by simply honoring what’s already around us.
Inspiring: Objects of Thoughtful Expression
The final layer—Inspiring—is where the magic truly happens. This is where your story begins to speak. It’s the soul of the home, expressed through the things that hold meaning for you—the pieces that reflect who you are, what you love, and how you want to feel in your space.
Sometimes it’s a photograph from your travels, a work of art that stirs something inside, or a small object that carries memory and weight. I don’t believe in filling a room just to make it look styled—I believe in layering soulfully and intentionally, so that every piece has a purpose and a voice.
Thoughtfully curated objects, personal mementos, and collected artwork come together to breathe life into the home. These details reflect your personality, your past, and your aspirations. They’re what take a space from simply beautiful to deeply personal.
The Inspiring layer adds richness and character. It invites reflection, sparks creativity, and fosters joy. When this layer is complete, your home doesn't just look like you—it feels like you.
Together, these three layers—Grounding, Intrinsic, and Inspiring—form the foundation of my work. They help me create not just beautiful interiors, but deeply felt ones. Spaces that don’t just look good in photos, but that hold you, calm you, and reflect who you are becoming.
Design, at its best, is not about trends or rules. It’s about listening—to the space, to your story, and to what you truly need to feel at home.
